Presentation

It was in 2003 that I discovered the world of funerals and I quickly became hooked on embalming as it became a key for me.

For a long time I have felt that immediate closure of the coffin was neither useful for any work that one could carry out on the remains nor for the grieving process for the family. Custom has always insinuated that there is a close resemblance between death and sleep, and our culture reproduced this idea. I often hear people say that "he had a nice death", meaning that the person died in his sleep. Actually, in our society, death remains a delicate subject and we do not accept its stigmas. My work, embalming, allows their removal to present the deceased with a peaceful appearance as if asleep.

In addition embalming allows practical solutions for the presentation of the deceased under the best conditions, for more or less time and for repatriations overseas.
Thus, in 2004, I joined the International College of Mortuary Science in Liege where I trained both in Belgium and the United Kingdom.

In 2007, I obtained the certificate of the European and International Examinations Board of Mortuary Science and following this became a member of the British Institute of Embalmers.
Since this date I have worked in the university anatomy department of “Notre Dame de la Paix” where I am in charge of donations of bodies for science.
In parallel, I worked as an independent embalmer since 2008, with the aim of reconciliation of the living and the dead.

Embalming

Embalming, Thanatopraxy Temporary Preservation or Hygienic Treatment are for me synonyms to describe our work and our art.

The aim is not to give an embalming course, however I would say that embalming consisted of an intra arterial injection of a certain preservative chemical, and drainage of blood from the venous system to achieve either “temporary preservation” the necessary time needed for viewing, or for shipping.
Put more simply, I could say partially replacing the blood. It is a low mutilating respectful technique that keeps the intregrity of the remains.

Respect for the deceased is a core value that every embalmer should believe in.

Embalming allows presentation of the remains under the best possible conditions;. With the features composed to give the appearance of sleep. The colour is natural and there are no unpleasant odours. All this with remains that are safe to handle.

Facial Restoration

Facial restoration is a collection of techniques used to restore the appearance of the deceased following major trauma.

Certain tragic circumstances such as road accidents, suicides from fire arms and other causes can disfigure the deceased. It is necessary to use specific techiniques to enable identification to take place and make a loved one recognisable.

Facial restoration is an alternative to closing the coffin.

The possibility to view the deceased following an unexpected sudden death helps in the grieving process, as the last farewell has a great importance in our society.

Facial restoration is also used by the judiciary to assist in identifiaction of victims.

With this in mind I have attended many courses throught the world and I hold the diploma from the prestigious Fountain National Acedemy in the United States and am now their representative for Belgium.
